Spelling for the 11+

Spelling is a key part of 11+ English, and strong spelling can make a real difference to your child’s overall score. Many mistakes happen because words sound the same but are spelled differently; others don’t follow rules and simply have to be learned.

What 11+ spelling questions test

  • Commonly confused wordstheir / there / they’re, accept / except
  • Prefixes and suffixesun–, re–, –ful, –less
  • Doubling ruleshop → hopping, but hope → hoping
  • Silent lettersknight, doubt, island
  • Plurals and verb endingsbabies, wolves, stopped
  • Tricky words to learn by heartnecessary, separate, beautiful

Exam tips

  • Break long words into syllables to make them easier to spell.
  • Say the word slowly and listen for each sound.
  • Look out for common traps: double letters, silent letters and confusing endings.
  • Always check your spelling if there’s time at the end.

In the exam your child may need to choose the correct spelling, spot a mistake, or write a word correctly in a sentence. Regular practice helps them spot patterns and avoid careless errors.
