The 11+ Tables & Timetables Guide
Table analysis strategies, finger intersection technique, and critical examiner traps.
The 3 Core Table Analysis Methods
Tables organise large amounts of information efficiently. In 11+ exams, speed and accuracy depend on knowing exactly how to extract data without misreading rows.
| Table Type | Structure | Primary Calculation | 11+ Shortcut |
|---|---|---|---|
| Timetables | Stations × Service runs | Journey duration (Arrival − Dep) | Bridge to next hour |
| Two-Way Tables | Category A × Category B | Missing entry = Total − Known | Row sum = Col sum |
| Distance Charts | City × City triangular grid | Mileage between two points | Symmetrical across diagonal |
| Fare & Pricing | Age / Group × Peak / Off-peak | Group cost & savings comparison | Multiply tickets first |
Never read a table using only your eyes! In exam booklets, eye-drift causes students to read the row above or below. Place your left finger on the row label, right finger on the column header, and trace them until they meet.
3 Critical 11+ Table Traps
When a timetable shows a hyphen (—) or blank cell at a station, students often mistakenly think the service terminates there or that it is delayed. It simply means the train runs express and DOES NOT stop!
In two-way frequency tables, the bottom-right corner is the Grand Total. Adding the sum of the row totals TO the sum of the column totals doubles the actual count of people!
When an exam question asks: "Which train must Amir catch to arrive at an interview before 10:00?", start by inspecting the ARRIVAL column, not the departure column. Find the latest train arriving ≤ 10:00, then read left to find the departure time.
