| Operation | Digit Shift Direction | Quick Example |
|---|---|---|
| × 10 | Shift digits 1 place LEFT | 4.25 × 10 = 42.5 |
| × 100 | Shift digits 2 places LEFT | 4.25 × 100 = 425 |
| × 1000 | Shift digits 3 places LEFT | 4.25 × 1000 = 4250 |
| ÷ 10 | Shift digits 1 place RIGHT | 4.25 ÷ 10 = 0.425 |
| ÷ 100 | Shift digits 2 places RIGHT | 4.25 ÷ 100 = 0.0425 |
| ÷ 1000 | Shift digits 3 places RIGHT | 4.25 ÷ 1000 = 0.00425 |
Trailing Zeroes Comparison Rule
To order or compare decimals, pad with trailing zeroes to match decimal lengths: e.g. comparing 0.4 and 0.09 → write as 0.40 and 0.09, making it clear that 0.40 > 0.09.
3 Core 11+ Calculation Rules
Follow standard GL & CEM working steps to eliminate easy calculation traps.
Column Addition & Subtraction
Strictly line up the decimal points in a vertical column. Fill empty spaces with placeholder zeros before subtracting.
4.5 − 1.28 → 4.50 − 1.28 = 3.2210 − 8 = 2.Multiplying Decimals
Multiply as whole integers first. Then count the total decimal places across both numbers and move the point left from the end.
0.04 × 0.7 → 4 × 7 = 28 (3 d.p. total) → 0.0280.028, not 0.28.Dividing Decimals (Scaling Method)
Make the divisor (second number) a whole number by multiplying both numbers by 10, 100, or 1000.
4.8 ÷ 0.06 → (4.8 × 100) ÷ (0.06 × 100) = 480 ÷ 6 = 80Decimals Practice Worksheet 🔒 Members
