Techniques and Exam Habits

Key rules and methods to solve Number Series quickly and accurately.

Rule 1: Calculate differences between adjacent terms first

Write down the difference between each consecutive number (+3, +5, +7 or x2, x2, x2). Often the difference itself forms an arithmetic progression.

Rule 2: Check for alternating (interleaved) two-stream sequences

If numbers jump up and down erratically, separate them into odd-positioned terms (1st, 3rd, 5th) and even-positioned terms (2nd, 4th, 6th).

Example: Sequence: 3, 6, 5, 10, 9, 18, ( ? )
Pattern: Multiply by 2, then subtract 1 (×2, −1, ×2, −1, ×2, −1).
Next term: 18 − 1 = 17.
