Comprehension A – River By Valerie Bloom

The River’s a wanderer,
A nomad, a tramp,
He never chooses one place
To set up his camp.
The River’s a winder,
Through valley and hill
He twists and he turns,
He just cannot be still.
The River’s a hoarder
And he buries down deep
Those little treasures
That he wants to keep.
The River’s a baby,
He gurgles and hums,
And sounds like he’s happily
Sucking his thumbs.
The River’s a singer,
As he dances along,
The countryside echoes
The notes of his song.
The River’s a monster,
Hungry and vexed,
He’s goggled up trees
And he’ll swallow you next.

Comprehension B – Events and Inventions That Shaped the World

Throughout history, certain events and inventions have dramatically changed the way
people live, work, and think. One of the earliest major shifts came in 1440, when
Johannes Gutenberg, a German inventor, created the printing press. This invention
allowed books to be copied quickly and cheaply, spreading knowledge across Europe
and helping to start the Renaissance—a period of great learning and discovery.
In 1776, the American Declaration of Independence was signed. It marked the birth
of the United States of America and inspired other nations to fight for freedom and
democracy. Just over a decade later, in 1789, the French Revolution began,
challenging the idea of kings ruling by divine right and sparking political change
across Europe.
The 19th century brought enormous technological advances. In 1876, Alexander
Graham Bell invented the telephone, revolutionising communication. Around the
same time, Thomas Edison developed the electric light bulb, bringing light to homes
and cities.
The 20th century saw even more dramatic developments. In 1903, the Wright
brothers achieved the first powered flight, changing travel forever. Later, in 1969, Neil
Armstrong became the first human to walk on the Moon, a powerful symbol of human
achievement during the Space Race between the USA and the Soviet Union.
In recent times, the rise of the internet, developed during the late 20th century and
popularised in the 1990s, has perhaps had the biggest impact on daily life. The
internet has connected the world, transformed businesses, and changed how we
learn, shop, and communicate.
These inventions and events, from the printing press to the internet, share a common
thread: they broke old limits and opened new possibilities. Understanding them helps
us see how the world we live in today was shaped by moments of bold change and
brilliant invention.
