The Glasshouse Garden
Every Wednesday afternoon, Isla visited the old glasshouse at the edge of the botanical gardens. Although the building was over a hundred years old, it remained filled with colour throughout every season. Tall palms stretched towards the curved glass roof, while bright orchids, delicate ferns and unusual cacti filled every corner.
Mr Carter, the head gardener, greeted visitors with muddy boots and an enormous smile. He believed that every plant had its own story.
“Some have travelled thousands of miles to grow here,” he liked to explain. “Others survive because generations of gardeners have cared for them.”
One rainy afternoon, Isla noticed a tiny seedling growing in a cracked clay pot near the entrance. Compared with the enormous tropical plants around it, it seemed completely unimportant.
“Why don’t you move it somewhere better?” she asked.
Mr Carter gently shook his head.
“Every great tree begins exactly like this,” he replied. “If we only cared for the biggest plants, we’d never have a forest.”
Over the following weeks, Isla watched the little seedling grow taller. Fresh green leaves appeared, followed by slender branches that slowly reached towards the sunlight filtering through the glass roof.
By the end of summer, the once-forgotten plant stood proudly beside much older trees. Visitors admired its healthy leaves without realising how small it had once been.
As Isla walked home, she realised that people often judged success too quickly. Growth was usually slow, almost invisible at first, but patience could transform something ordinary into something remarkable.
