The Hidden Observatory
For years, Ava had walked past the old stone observatory without giving it much thought. Perched on a quiet hill above the town, the circular building looked abandoned. Ivy climbed the walls, several windows were covered with wooden boards, and the rusty gate creaked whenever the wind blew.
One autumn afternoon, her science teacher announced that the local astronomy society had restored the observatory and invited the class to visit. Curious, Ava joined the trip.
Inside, she was surprised by how different it looked. The large telescope stood beneath a dome that slowly rotated with a gentle hum. Shelves were lined with star charts, old notebooks and photographs of planets taken decades earlier.
Mr Lawson, one of the volunteers, explained that before satellites existed, astronomers had spent countless hours observing the night sky by hand. They carefully recorded the positions of stars, tracked the movements of planets and predicted eclipses using mathematics and patience.
Later that evening, the roof opened, revealing a sky filled with hundreds of sparkling stars. As Ava looked through the telescope, she saw the craters of the Moon in remarkable detail. She realised that although modern technology could produce breathtaking images from space, there was something unforgettable about seeing the universe with her own eyes.
Walking home beneath the clear night sky, Ava found herself looking upward far more often than before. The observatory had not simply taught her about astronomy—it had changed the way she noticed the world around her.
