How to Spot Hidden Words

Step-by-step methods and scanning habits for GL Assessment and independent school 11+ exams.

Rule 1: Always cross the word boundary

The hidden word MUST be formed using the end of one word and the start of the immediately following word. It can never be entirely within one word.

Example: “The dog jumped over the tall gate happily.”
Look at tall and gate: tal[l + gate] → LATE (4-letter word).

Rule 2: Check standard letter splits systematically

Most 11+ hidden words are 4 letters long. Test these splits across two adjacent words:

  • 3 + 1: Last 3 letters of word 1 + First 1 letter of word 2
  • 2 + 2: Last 2 letters of word 1 + First 2 letters of word 2
  • 1 + 3: Last 1 letter of word 1 + First 3 letters of word 2

Exam Tip: Watch out for punctuation

Punctuation like commas or apostrophes can never be ignored. Only scan words that sit directly next to each other in the sentence.
