11+ Word Problem Strategies & Traps

Master the golden 5-step RUCSAC problem-solving framework and navigate the top three traps found in GL Assessment and CEM word problem questions.

1

The 5-Step RUCSAC Strategy

1. Read (R): Read the question twice. Underline key numbers, names, and the exact question being asked at the end.
2. Understand (U): Highlight operation keywords (“difference” → subtract, “product” → multiply, “share equally” → divide).
3. Choose (C): Draw a quick visual bar model to see the parts and relationships clearly before touching any numbers.
4. Solve (S): Perform arithmetic column calculations systematically with clear working space.
5. Answer & Check (AC): Re-read the question! Did it ask for Liam’s share, or how much Liam has more than Maya? Double-check units (£ vs pence).

Top 3 11+ Word Problem Traps

TRAP 1
The “Fraction of Remainder” Trap: If Leo spends 1/3 of his money, then spends 1/2 of the remainder, he does NOT have 1/6 left! He spent 1/3, leaving 2/3. Half of 2/3 is 1/3. Always track the changing remaining total.
TRAP 2
The Age Gap Trap: In 5 years, both people are 5 years older! The difference in their ages never changes throughout their lives.
TRAP 3
Pounds vs Pence Units: If pens cost 65p and the budget is £10, convert both to pence (1,000p ÷ 65p) or pounds (£10 ÷ £0.65) before calculating!
