The 3-Step Ratio Sharing Rule
Use this foolproof 3-step sequence to divide any quantity into a given ratio:
| Step | Action | Example (£60 in 3 : 2) |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1 | Add all ratio parts together | 3 + 2 = 5 parts |
| Step 2 | Divide total by number of parts | £60 ÷ 5 = £12 per part |
| Step 3 | Multiply 1 part by each share | 3 × £12 = £36 | 2 × £12 = £24 |
3 Critical Ratio Traps
Over 45% of ratio errors in 11+ exams occur because of these 3 subtle traps:
If the ratio of boys to girls is 3 : 4, the fraction of boys is 3/7, NOT 3/4! The denominator must always be the total parts (3 + 4 = 7).
Before simplifying a ratio like 50p : £2, you MUST convert them to the same units first! 50p : 200p simplifies to 1 : 4 (never 50 : 2).
If Alice gives 5 marbles to Bob, Alice loses 5 AND Bob gains 5! Total marbles remains constant. Always check your total at the end.
