Chart Methods & 11+ Data Rules
Essential formulas for bar chart scale intervals, continuous trend lines, pie chart angles (360°), and coordinates.
Chart Types & Angle Formulas
Essential rules for reading bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, and coordinates.
| Chart Type | Best Used For | Key 11+ Calculation Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Bar Chart | Discrete categories & frequencies | Grid Step = Difference ÷ Intervals |
| Line Graph | Continuous change over time | Interpolate values between data points |
| Pie Chart | Proportions of a whole (360°) | Angle = (Value ÷ Total) × 360° |
| Coordinates | 2D position in 4 quadrants | (x, y) Along corridor, up the stairs |
Pie Chart Benchmark Angles
• 90° = 1/4 (25%) | 180° = 1/2 (50%)
• 120° = 1/3 (33⅓%) | 60° = 1/6 (16⅔%)
• Formula: Value = (Angle ÷ 360°) × Total
3 Golden 11+ Chart Rules
Standard GL & CEM working steps to eliminate scale and data traps.
Calculate the Axis Step Interval First
Never assume each square equals 1! Find two numbered markers, subtract them, and divide by the number of grid gaps.
20 ÷ 4 = 5 per grid square.Pie Chart Angle-to-Quantity Conversion
Divide angle by 360°, simplify the fraction, then multiply by the total population.
72° of 45 students: 72/360 = 1/5 → 45 ÷ 5 = 9 students.4-Quadrant Coordinates & Reflections
Always write (x, y) with x horizontal first. When reflecting in the x-axis, y changes sign: (x, y) → (x, −y).
(3, 4) reflected across x-axis becomes (3, −4).Graphs & Data Handling Practice Worksheet 🔒 Members
