Explore train timetable route planners, two-way frequency solvers, distance matrices, and rapid table reading drills.

★
11+ Data Tables Focus: Always use ruler or finger alignment to intersect row and column headers, check for non-stop train hyphens (—), and use marginal subtraction ($Total − Known = Missing$) on two-way frequency tables.

The 11+ Tables & Timetables Guide

Table analysis strategies, finger intersection technique, and critical examiner traps.

Master Strategy

The 3 Core Table Analysis Methods

Tables organise large amounts of information efficiently. In 11+ exams, speed and accuracy depend on knowing exactly how to extract data without misreading rows.

Table TypeStructurePrimary Calculation11+ Shortcut
TimetablesStations × Service runsJourney duration (Arrival − Dep)Bridge to next hour
Two-Way TablesCategory A × Category BMissing entry = Total − KnownRow sum = Col sum
Distance ChartsCity × City triangular gridMileage between two pointsSymmetrical across diagonal
Fare & PricingAge / Group × Peak / Off-peakGroup cost & savings comparisonMultiply tickets first
The Finger Intersection Technique:

Never read a table using only your eyes! In exam booklets, eye-drift causes students to read the row above or below. Place your left finger on the row label, right finger on the column header, and trace them until they meet.

High-Yield Traps

3 Critical 11+ Table Traps

1
The Non-Stop Hyphen Trap Exam Trap

When a timetable shows a hyphen (—) or blank cell at a station, students often mistakenly think the service terminates there or that it is delayed. It simply means the train runs express and DOES NOT stop!

Example: A passenger wanting to get off at High Street cannot board Train 3 if it displays (—).
2
The Grand Total Double-Count Trap Warning

In two-way frequency tables, the bottom-right corner is the Grand Total. Adding the sum of the row totals TO the sum of the column totals doubles the actual count of people!

Rule: Grand Total = Sum of Row Totals = Sum of Column Totals. Do NOT add them together!
3
The Backwards Journey Trap Journey Planning

When an exam question asks: "Which train must Amir catch to arrive at an interview before 10:00?", start by inspecting the ARRIVAL column, not the departure column. Find the latest train arriving ≤ 10:00, then read left to find the departure time.

Rule: Plan backwards from arrival deadline to required departure.
