Techniques and Exam Habits

Key rules and methods to solve Missing 3 Letters quickly and accurately.

Rule 1: The 3 letters must be consecutive and stay in order

You cannot scramble or anagram the 3 letters. They must form an unbroken sequence inside the parent word.

Rule 2: Check common 3-letter words and trigraphs

Frequent 3-letter inserts in 11+ exams include: AND, THE, EAR, ALL, OUT, CAT, PAN, ILL, ONE, FOR, RED, ACE.

Example: Incomplete word: “ST( … )ING”. Inserting the 3-letter word ART forms STARTING (and “ART” is a valid English word).
Another common format: Find the 3-letter word completing both: C( … )ON and P( … )Y → ART forms CARTON and PARTY.
