11+ English Comprehension Practice Tests
At TestLife, our 11+ English Comprehension Practice Tests help children build the analytical, vocabulary and inference skills required for grammar school and independent school entrance exams. This page brings together a growing collection of fiction, non-fiction and theme-based comprehension passages designed to improve accuracy, confidence and exam-speed.
Whether your child is preparing for GL, CEM, or school-specific assessments, our tests focus on the key skills examined at 11+:
Literal comprehension – retrieving key information accurately
Inference and deduction – reading between the lines
Vocabulary understanding – identifying meanings from context
Author’s purpose and tone – analysing language choices
SPAG-linked comprehension – grammar and punctuation awareness
Evaluation & comparison – interpreting themes and viewpoints
Each passage comes with timed and untimed options, allowing students to practise at a comfortable pace before attempting real exam conditions.
What Is 11+ Comprehension?
11+ comprehension tests assess how well a child understands written texts and how effectively they can interpret meaning. Passages may come from classic literature, modern fiction, biographies, news articles, or scientific explanations. Strong comprehension skills support success not only in English but in Verbal Reasoning and long-form exam writing.
If you want additional vocabulary support while preparing for comprehension, the BBC Learning English Vocabulary section is a great external reference alongside our flashcards:

How to Improve Comprehension Skills
Read widely: Encourage daily reading of fiction, news articles, and factual texts.
Discuss what was read: Ask about characters, motivations, themes and predictions.
Practise inference: Guide your child to find clues that are not directly stated.
Build vocabulary: Use context to infer meanings and encourage dictionary use.
Attempt timed tests: Build exam-speed gradually with our 10–20 minute challenges.
