The solar system
The solar system is a team of planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and other objects that go around the sun. The sun is the biggest and heaviest thing in the solar system. It gives heat and light to the planets and their moons. The sun and the planets stick together because of gravity, a force that pulls objects towards each other.
The Inner Planets
The four planets closest to the sun are called the inner planets. They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. These planets are rocky and have solid surfaces. They don’t have much air. Mercury is the smallest and fastest planet, and it has no moons. Venus is the hottest and brightest planet, with a thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid. Earth is special because it has liquid water and life. It has one moon called the Moon. Mars is the red planet and has a thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide and two small moons, called Phobos and Deimos.
The Outer Planets
The four planets farthest from the sun are called the outer planets. They are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These planets are gas giants. They have thick atmospheres of hydrogen and helium and no solid surfaces. They also have many moons, rings, and other satellites. Jupiter is the biggest and heaviest planet, with at least 79 moons, including four large ones named Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Saturn is the second-largest planet and has the most amazing rings made of ice and dust. Uranus is the third-largest planet and spins differently than other planets, making its seasons unique. Neptune is the fourth-largest planet and has the strongest winds and storms in the solar system.
The Dwarf Planets
Beyond the orbit of Neptune, there are many small, icy objects called dwarf planets. They are like planets but haven’t cleared their orbits of other objects, sharing their space with asteroids, comets, and debris. The most famous dwarf planet is Pluto, once considered the ninth planet but reclassified in 2006. Pluto has five moons, with the largest named Charon. Other dwarf planets include Ceres, the largest object in the asteroid belt, and Eris, the most distant and massive dwarf planet.
The Asteroids and Comets
The solar system also has smaller objects like asteroids and comets. Asteroids are rocky or metallic objects mostly found in the asteroid belt, a region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Some asteroids are large, like Vesta and Pallas, while others are tiny, like dust particles. Comets are icy objects with long, tail-like features when they get close to the sun. They are mostly found in the Kuiper belt, beyond the orbit of Neptune, or in the Oort cloud, a spherical shell of comets at the edge of the solar system. Some comets, like Halley’s comet, return regularly every 76 years, while others, like Hale-Bopp, have irregular orbits and were last seen in 1997.
